What matters most to today’s teens? They follow the latest fashion fads and hip-hop artists. They shop at the mall and count the days to their driver’s permit. However, there is another side to today’s teens that often gets overlooked. This side is demonstrated in the 112 personal stories contained in “Teen Ink: What Matters” (Health Communications, Inc., April 2003, edited by Stephanie Meyer, John Meyer and Peggy Veljkovic.) Here the authors relate a variety of experiences that have taught them who they are, what they value, and what really matters. They candidly share their stories of cruelty, loss, separation, and self-doubt, as well as the beauty in everyday events.

Actor Martin Sheen, in the foreword to the book, writes, “I applaud the teen authors who courageously shared their compelling stories about what matters in their lives. Young people and caring adults alike will gain a great deal from listening to these honest voices that certainly give us hope for the future.”

“It is during our struggles that we begin to discover the larger truths and develop the values that govern our lives. I have learned that hope is vital to the existence of the spirit. Without it, we are nothing.” Valerie

“We all look different from each other, but we can all feel the same. We all feel many of the same emotions of love, hate, happiness and despair. We will never all think identically, though. That is what separates us most.” Monica

“Because of all the problems I have overcome, I have come to realize that difficulties are part of life, and perseverance is the key to success.” Patrick

“Waste not your time here. Smile. Take pleasure in the simple things and see the complicated ones as a challenge, a new journey. The little stresses of each day should be seen as a comedy of errors; enjoy your mistakes and remember to keep your life in perspective. Above all, love.” Rachel

“Tomorrow is promised to no one. Live each day as though it is your last, dream as though your life has barely begun, and make your dreams your reality.” Jennifer
